So… Speaking of the Cooper Union… and architecture. The Great Hall was a architectural innovation in many ways — all related to safety and comfort. Cooper decided to place the auditorium underground for two major reasons, (1) it blocked out street noise and (2) trampling deaths were a serious problem in an emergency and exiting UP made death by trampling less likely.

Furthermore, the ventilation system (still used today) was oversized by like 3X and the air quality is phenomenal. This was a major issue since it was below ground — and to prove the effectiveness of the system, they performed many demonstrations with chemicals and fires… switched the fans on and all of the smoke and gases were extracted almost immediately.

Cooper revolutionized building construction methods in general and the Foundation Building is a great example of this… also, a little tidbit of trivia. The Cooper Union, as you may know, is a tuition free institution (though it’s a little more complicated than “no tuition”). In order to make this happen, they have many streams of revenue… and one of those is the Chrysler Building!!! The land on which the building stands is owned in trust by the Cooper Union. And a huge chunk of revenue comes from the lease of the land.
