Dave, maybe he’ll grow up to make million blogging about sweeping up real estate on the cheap and lowballing sellers.

OR M4L by that time will built quiet a real estate empire and the kid will be a trust fund child and will be “artistic” and blog all day long.

  3. ET,

Tourism in NYC with 12 kids aged 7-16 on my dime on a rainy day is just something I wouldn’t attempt. Even a birthday party that size requires more than one adult and all the kids are the same age and have the same interests. Helps to have a house — get a movie, make tons of popcorn and just let them run wild.

Alternatively — spot the big ones (13 and over) $5 bucks each, set them free at the flea or on 5th Ave in the Slope(CDs, vintage clothes, food) and give them a time and place to meet you. Anything more than $5 bucks comes out of their own money. Take the younger ones bowling or to a movie.

Although you could check into the indoor rock climbing place around 3rd Ave/Douglass. Don’t know what they charge or whether you’d get a volume discount. Tell them you’re a foster mom, maybe they’ll give you a break.

  4. Cobble, 2 yrs ago, I gave a chinese kid $40 when I encountered him (may 14 or 15 yrs old) and his mom were collecting cans around dumbo (think it must’ve been 6:30am on a Sat). what got me was he was very content doing this vs what one would assume such teenager would feel embarassed doing this. I did some small talk with the mom and he chimed in how appreciative he was of his mom willing to do this can collecting to help the family and that he hope to repay her big when he grows up and in the meantime, he is willing and happy to help his mom with this and how they’ll look back at this to remind them of where they came from. I got some impressed with him, I gave him $40 and said breakfast is on me and that I hope I’ll have a son like him one day.

  5. jester, I would just ignore it. I have women in the office that make off handed remarks sometimes but overall mean well(not to sound sexist but I never had an offhanded remark from a man at work).

  6. quote:
anyone else notice there’s more & more folks collecting aluminum cans for the 5c recycling? am seeing more young looking folks too. Econ stinks and those of us with jobs are F’ing super lucky.

i actually thought about doing that. (seriously). i have no clue where to bring them tho. and honestly, id feel like a dickhead doing it when there are definitely people much worse off than me that really really really need to do it. im broke as hell til monday but im sure i can hustle (no homo) some way to make it thru the weekend without having to collect cans.

    *rob*
