snappy, you’re getting a lot of mis-information re the term ‘mutual fund’.
A mutual fund is simply a collection of folk’s money, like yours, that is invested in a specific thing, presumably managed by a professional so they can do better than us schmucks (pls note my use of the word ‘presumably’, lol).
Seems that many of the posters assume that a ‘mutual fund’ invests in stocks (equities) but that is not so. The objective of any fund is in its prospectus, and the name of the fund is supposed to have a relationship to its name. But a mutual fund can be as safe as can be (only short-term US Treasuries, for example) or very risky (only Vietnamese equities, as another). So don’t let the term ‘mutual fund’ scare you, what’s scary (or not) is the investments it holds.
Based on what you say, I would either leave the money in an FDIC-approved savings account, or buy a CD with a term not more than two years and even that’s pushing it.
It’s unfortunate, and it is a by-product of the crisis we are in, but here is no way to get any half-assed rate of return right now without taking on a fair amount of risk, so just accept that.
This won’t go on forever, large institutions who have to hold a lot of cash and other diverse constituencies like seniors are gonna start squawking at a zero rate of return on their cash and I bet the Fed will start raising interest rates sooner rather than later.
And I agree w dibs, stay away from annuities, even from the more honest cos like MetLife and NY Life. They are full of hidden charges and other risks.
