  1. I had a beautiful vintage Cartier watch. A rare round version of the tank watch from the 1920s or thereabouts. Stolen. From Cartier no less. In for cleaning a scratch on the face, the NYC store shipped it to the Beverly Hills store for repair (wtf??), and allegedly it was stolen as part of a much larger UPS shipment. They replaced it with a POS watch made from vintage parts. I’ve never bought their story, but had no way to disprove it.

  2. “At least cartier is a watchmaker. Tiffany is not, just repackages the movements.

Not really. Cartier is a jewellery-maker first and foremost. The quartz movements are nice but still “only” quartz movements and their automatic movements are off-the-shelf from ETA.

  3. But you will be, DH, so it’s good that you acquired your expensive taste early!

    I hope so!!

I guess watches are the male version of females and handbags.

oh – except fine timepieces appreciate in value and can be sold for a profit, not accumulate in a closet somewhere.
