  1. cobble, Spaniards can understand Hispanics but they refuse to. It’s not like it is here where you would make an effort to understand someone who is speaking english with an accent.

    Personal anecdote…..we used to go get breakfast every morning by our school in Salamanca when I studied abroad. The first week, my spanish was very poor so the Dominican classmate ordered for us. He asked for eggs & bacon with toast. He referred to bacon as ‘Jamon’ which is the Hispanic translation for bacon and the person behind the register gave him the DIRTIEST look you have ever seen while he knew exactly what my classmate was asking for. He then shouted on the whole place that in THIS country we refer to bacon as ‘tocino’ and only a Hispanic can call it ‘Jamon’.

    Maybe the little kind that come in packets of hot chocolate.

  3. Etson;

    I fully agree. When I was a kid, it was considered polite to refer to an Asian person as an Oriental. When I went to work for AT&T, we received a pamphlet of terms that were offensive. We were informed that the word “Oriental” was highly offensive.

    You haven’t experienced “uber-political-correctness” until you’ve attended an affirmative-action lecture at AT&T -trust me on this one. After I left those indoctrinations, er, I mean, lectures, I wanted to apologize to half the world for my forebearers’ offenses, even their impure thoughts.
