…yeah, ummm evolution…
which is what we were talking about yesterday,
which reminds me to clarify a point I read earlier about supreme court justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia.
religious faith, is by no means mutually exclusive of belief in evolution,
no more so than being a supreme court justice demands one to be an originalist.
many faithful believe that holy scriptures are indeed based on the word of God, or based on the word of God as interpreted by his prophets.
while the old testament does describe the creation of man directly by God and in his image,
it does not mean that the scriptures are held to be entirely literal. In fact, their interpretation over the millenia may be a 5000 year game of telephone line.
In other words,
while science tells us that man evolved from primates over the course of a million years,
it does not mean that it was not God’s hand in directing that evolution.
and in any case, why should an individual’s beliefs in what is condidered God’s law be a litmus test for their ability to interpret man’s laws, any more than an atheist’s lack of belief would?
I vaguely remember this movie. I don’t have sound so I have to listen later but I can only imagine the creepy tone behind Hal 9000. Wasn’t he a guest star on the Simpsons?
…alright,
well anyway,
that was HAL 9000 from 2001 A Space Odyssey,
Stanley Kubrick
people are always confused by the ending,
where the astronaut is turned into some giant embroyo,
what’s happening there is that he’s being reborn into the next stage of evolution.
l4w, you have inspired me. This used to be my answering machine message (up to “cliff”):
“I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around – nobody big, I mean – except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff – I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be.”

It used to be something from “Notes from Underground.” Someone left me a message, “That’s not fucking profound, that’s fucking profane.”
