freedom is over-rated when one is dirt poor. they dont give an F if they have real elections, real democracy,…..
it’s a delicate balance for China gov – how to distribute enough wealth to the real dirt poor folks so they can love the gov for improving their lives a ton (and put out thoughts of massive revolt) but not make too many of them into middle class folks cause middle class folks are not complaining about roof over head, food on the table, heat in the house,… they dare become American (ie heavy into politics, vote,..)
It’s true Rob, regular polls of Americans show many want less freedom of speech and increased police-state tactics such as water boarding under the impression that it will keep us safe.
Ben Franklin wisely said that those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither.

with freedom comes way too much responsibility for some people. it’s also very overwhelming for many.

That act is probably the most destructive to democracy because it allows nasty items like Prop 8 to pass and disallows the federal government to stop it based on constitutional law. I’m no fan of big government but the whole states rights thing is one of the issues undermining this country. We are either one country with one set of constitutional laws or we aren’t. You should be able to get married to a man or a woman in one state, adopt and be able to ride without fear through another state. And one religion should never be given legislative credibility over another, or over anything in the public sector. Let them keep their tax status but butt out of politics.
