  1. “2. My parents have a bunch of slide carousels and want to make space. Anyone convert slides to jpegs with a reasonable resolution? Did you use a service or buy a scanner? What service did you use? What level resolution should I insist upon?”

I actually just finished a similar project. I scanned all my old negs (my serious color work is on slides, but a lot of old family parties and what not). I used a flatbed to do around 8000 images in a fairly automated process using Adobe Lightroom, at lo rez. Then I re-scanned a coupla hundred using a film scanner. I gave out some really nice surprises for Christmas (mostly to nieces and cousins who didn’t know their parents were ‘hot’ before the kids came along). The project took four months of spare hours.

To get really good scans from slides, you need a dedicated film scanner, and they are slow. You _can_ get decent scans from a really good flatbed, the only one I would recommend right now would be the Epson 750.

The real question to ask is what will be the final use. That would determine what rez you will need. IOW, will they be making 11×14 prints from any? Or do they just want lo-rez images for the web?

Frankly if they don’t have a lot of imaging software or experience with it, and plans to buy all this hardware, they’d be better off with a service.

Scanning the images at 1000ppi on the long side will allow you to make 8×10 images at 300ppi.

There are a lot of services out there that do this stuff but unfortunately I’m not familiar with names.

ANother suggestion, if they are all in carousels and they are just looking for room is to take them out of the carousels and put them in slide pages which take up a lot less room.

  2. “Can we have a secret “coming out of the closet” day for ‘Stoner liberals who want to admit that they’re really a conservative?”

I don’t know if you’re gonna find a lot of closeted conservatives, benson, but the moderates are easy to spot. I count at least 3.

  3. Only you, Arkady. But that’s the perfect word to describe the threads some days. And no offense to Williamsburg and Bay Ridge, but can we please have a ROTD in another neighborhood for a change???
