OK, it’s Monday, and the mean comes out. I totally agree with bxgrl and Pete about the Gowanus family. The article was about a woman who has spent her life helping those less fortunate than she is, in the same projects, by mentoring kids, and being a positive role model for people who may have no others in their lives. What does she get for it from the affluent Brownstoner pundits? Eviction!!!!! Her son and herself called pieces of sh*t. Gee, thanks Times, for running a positive article about a place that all of you, as representatives of well off Brooklyn, are certain is nothing but crime, drugs, and deadbeats all day, every day. No good deed goes unpunished.
First of all, who here knows how the subsidies for the projects work? Subsidized housing is supposed to help support those who can’t afford market rate, and get them into safe, and decent housing, so they can earn a living, and become the productive members of society we all strive to be. This woman certainly passes the test. Who the hell are we to tell her that she should get out because we, the priveleged and successful few, have deemed that she has too much space?
So how come it’s ok and cost effective for suburban and wealthier kids to still live with Mom, but it’s “creepy” for her son? She’s helping him in the same way. A consultant is nothing but a title. I’m a consultant, so are a lot of people. Doesn’t mean they make money, I’m certainly not raking it in. So the man lives at home until he can do better. Would you rather be tripping over him in the subway station, or encounter him in an alley? He could be doing that, too.
I’m sorry, but that story brought out the worst, and I’m rather amazed. We know little of her situation, and far less about public housing, to make the statements about her worth, or worthiness, of an apartment in a place most of you have never visited, and certainly would never live in. Rob, you are NOT right about this. How dare you call her a greedy hog and her son a deadbeat. She lives in a large apartment in the freaking projects, a place she has tried to better over years of living. A place that she and especially her son, are more statistically likely to be a crime victim in, 3 bedroom or not. It’s not a 3 bedroom at the Dakota. Yes, the projects is a place most would like to leave, but they were not designed as such. They were meant to be affordable places for people to live, so they could do all of those low paying jobs that we need people to do, and still stay in the metropolitan area. They were designed to help people lead productive lives. Not everyone can or will make enough money to be able to find market rate apartments. Subsidized housing is meant to be a community, where people take care of their families, and other people’s families, when necessary. In the old days, people lived there their entire lives, not because they enjoyed some kind of sponging off the system, but because it was a good place to live. Her apartment is her home, not a temporary holding cell from which she and her son should be moved from space to space when outsiders, who never heard of her until this morning, deem she is somehow unworthy of her apartment, an apartment she more than pays for, each and every day.
No CarGar I wasn’t. And yes people do game the system- There is no denying that but I refuse to assume this woman is . And I refuse to insult and trash her based on assumptions, insteado f all the facts.
Neither did I appreciate being accused of “soft racism” by IJ. But I guess that was ok in your book?
“Unbelievable that airport security always fights the last battle – shoes, underwear etc. Perhaps they would do better if they tried to think ahead of the terrorists instead of one step behind.”

I flew back to the US from London on Delta two days after the attempted attack. Security was nowhere near that intrusive – just took a look in everyone’s hand luggage before we got on the plane.

The TSA is a joke.
“Biff, if one is travelling with a buddy (no homo) can one offer to put one’s hands down one’s buuddy’s pants????”
ROFL, Dave! As long as you offer up your hands for the inspector to sniff for explosives, I don’t see why not.
From now on, I’m flying commando.

The TSA is unionized, correct????
“I forgot my passport at my mom’s and the customs guy let me through with my NYS Driver’s License! I was completely shocked he did.”
See. This is what I mean. Porous borders. This is proof positive they’ll let any old terrorist into the country!
