I have a blinding headache right now, so please forgive me for making this comment and running…I’ll be back to defend it later.
I cannot fault Mrs. Obama for only recently being proud of this country. I am an (over!)educated black woman with a couple of degrees. Sounds great, right? Wrong.
Even in my $400 business suits, I get followed around stores under the assumption that black people steal. It is tolerated and even celebrated by many ‘Americans.’
When talking to people of different ethnicities, I constantly get the shocked statement regarding how “articulate” I am. The shock of articulate black people is tolerated and even celebrated by many ‘Americans.’
I’ve been to museums where the ‘birth of man’ is separated into two sections…one showing where white people came from a boat sailing from Europe and blacks were shown to have grown from apes in chains. It is tolerated and even celebrated by many ‘Americans.’
When I came close to feeling a sense of patriotism immediately after 911, I was quickly brought back to reality by the popular saying at the time – ‘America is no longer hunting the land N—–r, and now we are hunting the sand N—–r.’ It was tolerated and even celebrated by many ‘Americans.’
So many young children don’t get a decent, let alone good, education in this, one of the richest countries in the world. We are content to have good schools in rich neighborhoods while poorer neighborhoods suffer. And we pat ourselves on the back when we pass ridiculous legislation like “No Child Left Behind.” It is tolerated and even celebrated by many ‘Americans.’
I could go on and on about why I don’t feel ‘proud’ of this country, and the fact that I have a law degree and a master’s wont’ ever change this. I need more than a few initials after my name and an expensive student loan bill to feel a sense of national pride.
I agree with Arkady’s 2:39 post
The fact remains that the ME is a place where young men in particular are completely disenfranchised and are frankly depressed and don’t have hope in this life, so they fall prey to these horrible terror leaders who convnice them they have nothing to gain by living here on this earth but they will have a better time in the afterlife after they blow up a few or many innocents, usually their own countrymen. It’s just so sad

gemini,
that’s funny, last I heard , the underwear bomber was the son of a wealthy businessman and higherup in his country.
guess all that money disenfranchised him from his brain.
Legion – In VA & NJ the dems were unpopular all on their own – it wasn’t a referendum on the party. And the point about the screw-up on the GOP tkt in NY speaks to precisely why I want to hold off on the bet – misguided people who vote by knee jerk are dangerous to all of us: vide, the idiots who keep saying get gov’t out of Medicare. I’m hoping that the far-right wackos will remain fringe. But let’s look at Stupak. The man’s son killed himself w/ his father’s gun & he continues to support the NRA. If pro-lifers espoused the values his constituents hold dear he’d be assassinated.
Legion, my guess as of now is republicans pick up a net gain of one or two. But that is without seeing all the candidates. National moods tilt scales but don’t fully determine outcomes. And several big dynamics are still developing — tea party, pace of recovery or not, closure or more trouble on teh terrorism front.
