  1. I let my license lapse back in the 90’s and I had to take the 5 hr course in order to get a new license. (To all serious procrastinators – don’t ever let your driver’s license go that long, it’s really not worth the money and aggravation that goes into renewal). I registered with that driving school on Jay St, between Willoughby and Fulton, downtown. NY Driving School, maybe? Big sign on facade of building….

Anyway, I took the refresher course, which included 2 hours of driving in one of their cars, which would be the car I drove for the test. I wasn’t sure I would be too good at parallel parking after all that time, and it wasn’t my best skill anyway, before moving to NYC. The instructor was nice, he apparently got lots of lapsed drivers, and we went over to a deserted part of Williamsburg near the Navy Yard to practice. The actual test was on Staten Island, which is supposed to be easier than the one in Brooklyn. The school made the appointment. They scheduled 3 other people besides myself, and the instructor drove us all out there, and we took turns with the car and the DMV test giver. It was really easy, since wherever we were in Staten Island was very non congested and small town. It was actually less congested than my original test upstate in Norwich, way back when I was in high school. Yes, they had inflatable wheels then.

Long story long, I think it cost around $200 for the whole process. A high price for procrastination.

  2. I went to my friend’s house on Eighth Ave for a party last night. I’ve been there before but am still amazed at how much mahogany there is in that staircase and all the first and second floor panelling!!!!

I should have taken a pic to post here.
