  1. I think I’d just run if I saw parquet! I’m with Rob on that one. I just don’t like the stuff. Instead of measuring it, I’d be wondering how much it would cost me to rip it out and replace it with some nice brazilian cherry 🙂

Empty rooms are also great for laying out your stuff. If you take along a roll of painter’s tape and a piece of paper with the measurements of your sofa, bed, etc. on it, you can map them out on the floor with the painter’s tape to give you an idea of how your stuff would fit in any given room.

Sigh. I’ve got all these tricks in mind and no moolah to buy a damned house!

  2. I’ve gone to houses and if I really liked them and there was no floor plan (lazy broker), I’ve sketched the plans. Plus, I’m really good at eyeballing measurements.

Tricks if you don’t have a measuring tape:
    – Parquet floor tiles are typically 12″, count them, you’ll get a rough dimension.
    – Your arms open and extended are your height. Start measuring the wall and multiply.
    – Know what your foot measures with shoes on and do what your mother did and pace the room, heal to toe….then multiply.
