Mornin’ losers!
Tybur is right…picking up and moving on the fly is not a real option for most sane folks.
DH is partially right…wipes are essential (without them you have to take a shower after each…uh…episode of dropping the kids off at the pool) but the cheapest and best way to go is Huggies or similar brand baby wipes (do not flush them!), and yes, you take a small amount with you everywhere you go (except to other people’s homes because it’s super rude to drop a stinky wipe into someone’s bathroom trash.)
“ENY – when you try to lease your rental do you go thru a broker and require a security deposit/last months’ rent up front?”
No, I found my last rental (in 2000, one year before I bought my house) through checking ads and talking to folks. No broker. I found an apartment at 521 Dean St. in PH, rented my own U-Haul, got some friends/family together, and moved mny sh*t out of my previous place at 415 Bergen St. The new LL did require last month’s rent and security upfront, but I didn’t find that unusual. I had timed things so I was just about up on my lease at 415 Bergen, so no “overlapping.” All it took was some hard work, planning and foresight. Whining is for suckers.
Dipster — New York law is totally fucked up with security deposits. The only wording is “within a reasonable time.” Nice right?! They basically can take as long as they want. My first place in Prospect Heights took 2 months — and only because my old roommate and I called them about 10 times each and wrote them several letters (and we only started with this AFTER 30 days had passed.)
Almost everywhere else in this country has a 30 or 60 day rule.
“I’m currently in a battle with my former landlord over my security deposit. Might need some advice from you more informed people later.”

My advice:
“You should just move. There’s plenty of apartments out there.”
DH, we thought so, too. I think this was unusual, too. He did all the right stuff, they just held onto it for a longlong time. I remember when the check finally arrived, we thought he wasn’t getting it back. We’d sort of written it off.

chicken, was it awkward? Do you immediately regret it? Or did you regret having lost contact for 20 yrs?
I had a coffee this morning with a guy I went to high school with – not seen each other for 20 years!

It’s probably because you smoked in your apartment, DH 😉
