Ditmas, the problem is that I do pitch in. I make a point of taking on EVERY available task during the months I’m around. Even the board president admitted I do more in 5 months than a lot of tenants who are here all year round.
But it is easier to backbite me when I’m not here. So I’ve become what the Cantonese so wonderfully express as a “sik sei mau”.
That translates as “Scapegoat”, but it literally means “One who eats the dead cat.”
WonTon – In your situation, you need to get out of your small self-managed building and into a large building with a management company. Small buildings need everyone to pitch in, and if you are away for half the year, it’s no surprise that the other shareholders are upset.
dibs, since we all rotate as board members, everybody pretty much knows who’s mortgaged in the building, and who’s not, and what the purchase prices of the apartments were.
rob–yeah, trash duty is one of the things. But there are a zillion other tasks, from gardening, to painting, to getting estimates for major repairs, etc.
I always try to do extra stuff when I’m here, but since I’m away a lot, people are grousing behind my back and complaining. They are trying to pass a rule that would fine me over 1K for not being on the board. That’s why I got the lawyer.
The whole thing is really Kafka-esque. I wonder if any other building in PS operates like this.

Whoops! I said the C-word….
I meant the triad members, WonTon.
“Stalinist” was the word my lawyer used to describe my building….
