  1. “most satisfying renovation”

I’d have to say my garden. It had great bones (and not from Guido’s Funeral Home next door), but had been abandoned by the prior owners, and I worked on it non-stop for 10 years. It became a labor of love for someone who had never planted anything before. That’s what I miss most about my house.

Kens, I’m with you. Having lived through renovating a house, I know what to do and what not to do next time, and now I can also turn to Brownstoner and all the PLUSAs for advice.

  2. “I plan to renovate my apt by walling my roommate in the basement”

    dh, ROFL!

rob, between the packing peanuts and your comments in the Williamsburg thread, you’re really cracking me up today!

  3. Dibs – All that is past, though. We live in a different time. Conservatives used to be interested in preserving land, too, but now they’re the ones who want to mine on delicate ground, cut trees from important forests. The Elephants’ memories aren’t the values they espouse today.

  4. I gutted my whole studio and did everything for scratch. It was satisfying and I learned A LOT, primarily not to do the same mistakes that I did. I had a semi-horror story that involved fighting with contractor and kicking one out because I took the one that gave me the bargain price but everything turned out more or less fine. It wasn’t the ideal renovation but hey, I was 26 years old and learned from my mistakes. No biggie, after I sell this place, I’ll know exactly what to do on a new one.

I wish I knew about Brownstoner back when I bought. Would of helped me out a lot back then.
