The concept of people being brought together by ideas or words and not by physical or social similarities is really nothing new. But I find that in other idea-driven human clusters there inevitably is a noticable degree of physical and social and age similarity as well. Consider a Star Trek convention or Comic-Con. The wide disparity in age, appearance and social factors among last night’s group is quite stark in comparison. If you name a factor that would ordinarily draw people together I can name people who were there last night who are on quite different ends of the spectrum.
Totally agree with you MM. Do people on Huffington Post or DailyKos or RedState get together? We are really diverse and it warms my heart to be part of such a group.
