  1. Actually this same thing happened to us , sort of, in Philly. We have a friend who cleans the house down there. He is black. He’s also partner to the guy directly behind us so he’s in the neighborhood a lot. One day, while he was cleaning the house, he was sitting in our yard relaxing, having a smoke. We were not home. The yard is right up against the street as it’s a corner townhouse. A neighbor, two houses away, called the cops because this black man was in our yard, sitting there, reading a magazine and smoking.

  2. I’m a carnivoire through and through, but if anyone’s a vegetarian, a friend and I went to Gobo in the West Village. Not expensive and very tasty. And I didn’t even feel the urge to grab a burger after we left.

  3. “ENY, haven’t seen a clutch performance from a Yanks player in playoff in a long long time. Even Mr Clutch has been very so so in recent yrs.”

I’d agree w/this M4L. We’ll see what happens down the stretch.

  4. I hear you, CH. This guy has to be among the most distinguished and accomplished people on that block. But somehow his neighbor didn’t know Dr. Gates, a black man, lived next door? Nor did the clueless cop think “This guy might be a professor…”

Like you, I think the “take-away” from this story is that we’re not there yet, despite what some folks might want you to believe.

  5. “I’d like them to “out” the neighbor.”

I wouldn’t. Just someone that saw something that looked suspicious and did the right thing. The police seem to have been heavy-handed but I think the neighbor is blameless.

  6. Just to tie to completely different posts here together, I saw an obviously stinking rich white lady get arrested on main st (probably not the actual name) in East Hampton a few weeks back after she started getting shirty with a cop over a traffic incident (she was obviously in the wrong in her Maybach). She could have got off with a warning but just kept making it worse for herself by what she said. It was quite a thing for the onlookers when she was put in the cop car. Didn’t make the news though.
