  1. “I have some MAJOR issues w/ the Catholic Church but I don’t think the Monsignor over at my old parish is in on some kind of conspiracy.”

Have you asked gay men and women in California who want gay marriage what they think about that? Prop 8 wasn’t a conspiracy of religious organizations to deny rights to gays? Seems it was to me.

  2. You know those empty factories in Williamsburg and Greenpoint have a lot more to do with why there are no jobs than illegal immigrants. I just want everyone who wants to to be able to make a life for themself, no matter who they are or where they’re from. De-industrialization is making this harder and harder to do. People in this country need to make things again. Illegal immigration is a bad sympton of a race to the bottom but it’s not the cause, the race (to the bottom) itself is the cause and that affects everyone here.

  3. joe- aren’t you assuming What had a father?

I’m not saying you don’t have some points-but this country needs to be much more realistic about immigration, and much more compassionate. The illegals I see have the worst, lowest paying jobs- not because they want them. No one else does. They had a contractor gut reno the house next door to me for section 8 residents. Those guys worked under truly horrible conditions including not one single dust mask. Try telling a teenager he can work for minimum wage in filthy and unsafe conditions with no, even minimal protection from 7 am to 9 pm. Lets see how many jump at the chance.

And if they were legalized, they would pay taxes- as it is, even as illegals they pay money- they buy food, rent housing, buy clothes and gas. A lot of small businesses who do pay taxes, depend on them. But by going after them, we spend millions in pursuit, we lose revenue we could be gettig if they were legal, and any number of other less than beneficial results.

  4. What,

I belatedly heard your call. I was dealing with work, so just catching up. Yeah, Joe spewed some garbage. I can’t speak for anyone else, but sometimes I find it best to ignore a jerk like that. He said some bigoted sh*t just to put himself in the middle of a brownstoner kerfuffle. But I don’t think it shows that the brownstoner community is engaged in an exercise in race/class warfare if they don’t actively jump all over a comment like that. Seriously, I imagine there have been times in your life when you experienced bigoted slights, or heard bigotry directed to others, and you decided not to dignify it with a response rather than go after it directly. Doesn’t make you a bigot.
