Hubby grew up in Queens and remembers the nabe being more modest in scale. There were still some smaller homes that haven’t taken the construction steroid. There were about 6 homes undergoing renovation.
We did pass this house, which I loved!! It is right on the water. I hate to think of someone getting their hands on it and tackifying it.
BRG,
Thanks for those – interesting. Have driven near there but don’t know it well.
Personally I think they are grotesque (but fun to look at, briefly), but each to their own…
Kens – Malba is on the northern shore of Queens, maybe 2-3 miles further out than LaGuardia, just past College Point. I would say on Long Island Sound, but it may still count as the East river.
Thanks BRG and etson.
From the pics, I would of guessed Mill Basin or something along the lines of Monclair, NJ or five towns, LI.

m4l…those are all new. Even back in the 30s the mob had taste and wouldn’t build things like that. 🙂
Here’s the second link:

There was one house bigger than the first one I posted with this elaborate gate. It was insane! I wish I had my camera.
I felt like I was in florida.
Kens, you heard of Whitestone Queens? Malba is the neighborhood west of it.
BRG, most of those houses look like old bldgs or relatively new construction?
Not sure why the second link isn’t working…but here is another.

BRG, holy moly, those houses are nice. Never even heard of Malba, Queens.
Those are some huge houses, BRG. I kinda like the 3rd one, though I can’t imagine that thing within the 5 boroughs.
