  1. One more memory of the summertime scene in Brooklyn…

When I was growing up in Gravesend, the neighborhood was half Italian, and half Jewish. The Italians all lived in 2 family rowhouses, and the Jews all lived in the apartment buildings. Most of the Jewish people were elderly folks, and their favorite summertime activity was to come down in front of their building with a beach chair, line them up on both sides of a the sidewalk and while away the hours chatting (pre-OT activity). The funny thing I remember was that as you approached this “gauntlet”, they would stop talking about the previous topic, look you over as you passed by, and then “review” the person after they left. Does anybody else remember this scene? Bxgrl?

Well, in addition to broken antennas, another hazard of playing ball in the street was that a football would sometimes hit them. Most of them spoke with a Yiddish accent, and that’s when they would scream at us “Vy dawnt you gow play is ze park?!?!?!”

When I was a teen, I worked as a delivery kid in our local butcher, which was named “Schwartz and Geraci’s”. They had all bases covered.

  2. “I can remember numerous times (as I’m sure you do) when a guy would finish spiffying up his car, and then watch his antenna get whacked off by a football thrown in the wrong direction.”

HA! HA!!! Benson, it’s like we grew up on the same block! You could start BIG trouble by whacking off one of those non-retractable antennas, which was bound to happen because ALL antennas were non-retractable back then and street baseball/football games were a summertime standard.

  3. Thanks ENY, but I’m going to try the places M4L suggested or next time I’m at my in-laws during the day, do it in their driveway…but convincing hubby to spend a weekend afternoon washing the car will be impossible as he could care less about it being clean.

Maybe I should tell him I’ll wear the plastic pumps when we’re washing car. I don’t think that would fly with the in-laws though, they think I’m a good girl.
