A new design’s been chosen for the rehabilitation of the Kosciuszko Bridge. The design, one out of four proposed to Brooklyn and Queens residents, is the same one the Brooklyn Paper called the front runner last November. Along with a new aesthetic, the bridge will be widened from six to nine lanes and get a shoulder and a bike lane. Gone will be Kosciuszko’s steep incline. The billion dollars needed to build it has been lined up through federal funding, with a tentative completion date of 2017.

New Kosciuszko Bridge Won’t Come Cheap [Brownstoner]
If should NEVER take that long to build a damn bridge THAT short, especially with all the advances in engineering.
This will definitely help. Much of the backup is because of the intersection with the LIE at the Queens side of the bridge. That and the elimination of the steep incline will make a huge difference.
Not so sure about the bike lane–where does it go? And it’s redundant considering the planned bike lane on the Greenpoint Ave. bridge.
As for the construction, mnaybe they will prefabricate it and float it in on a barge, like they are doing with the Willis Ave. bridge? I can dream, can’t I?
I like the design.
Did they settle the deal with the native americans yet?
NYGuy7, I’m less concern about traffic impact AFTER completion but rather if traffic gets materially worst DURING the long construction period. That traffic back up is 1 reason I crossed Queens off the list when house hunting
Very futuristic!!!! It actually looks like the Pudong Bridge in Shanghai which, by the way, was completed in the early 1990s!!!!!
I like it !!
It will be an improvement but I doubt it’ll will alleviate the traffic problems crossing the bridge. While adding more lanes sounds good, it’s still going to funnel back down to three lanes once you cross it.
“The billion dollars needed to build it has been lined up through federal funding, with a tentative completion date of 2017.”
ROTFLMMFAO….More likely $3 Billion and 2025. It’ll be a union clusterfuck.
Like it but is a bike lane really necessary? Disclosure, I’m a cyclist.
