A new design’s been chosen for the rehabilitation of the Kosciuszko Bridge. The design, one out of four proposed to Brooklyn and Queens residents, is the same one the Brooklyn Paper called the front runner last November. Along with a new aesthetic, the bridge will be widened from six to nine lanes and get a shoulder and a bike lane. Gone will be Kosciuszko’s steep incline. The billion dollars needed to build it has been lined up through federal funding, with a tentative completion date of 2017.

  1. Nine lanes on both sides, Dave. Presumably one lane is for the bike lane, so 4 on each side. 2 lanes can feed into/out of the LIE, which is almost at the entrance to the midtown tunnel westbound,.

The incline is definitely an issue for trucks on the current bridge.

  3. Would love to see a Shanghai style revamp of all of NYC’s infrastrucutre… the Nanpu and Lupu bridges were built quickly. I just returned from two months there, and the city makes NY systems feel ancient.

Too bad the new Kosciuszko will still connect to a 1950’s highway.

  4. Why is the steep incline an issue for cars and trucks???

If it’s going to be 9 lanes but only 3 lanes feed onto and off of it then a moron has designed it and it’s too costly.
