Chinese-4th-Avenue-0410.jpg
After experiencing rapid growth in 2007, restaurants at the North end of 4th Avenue have had a rough time of it. First the beloved Mule closed (and is still vacant), then Dean St. Grill and short-lived Mexican restaurant Bigotes. But business may be picking up again with the a new Chinese take-out restaurant nearing completion between Dean and Bergen Streets next door to the Salsa Salsa Dance Studio. Judging by the foot-traffic coming from the Atlantic station, this place could stand to do a swift business if the food is good. They estimate that they’ll be open in about a month. GMAP

  1. I liked Mule a lot too. Thought they had a really nice backyard (with the big long shared table if I rememner correctly) and good sandwiches/soups. I don’t think comparing them to Canteen makes sense. It’s really just a deli.

One of my biggest complaints about Mule was in the mornings. They’d have one person working doing coffees and bagels, etc. What would be a 30 second coffee purchase at most places could take up to 10 minutes if there were any remotely complex orders ahead of you.

  2. BSD,

I think what is most annoying about your response is that you seem to be lumping many groups together at once and deciding their food preferences for them. I live in the neighborhood, and I am both Black and a yuppie (what a concept!). While I’d love something else besides Chinese take-out, I’ll definitely be looking forward to this opening since there are not Chinese take out spots in the neighborhood that I currently like. I’ll let my white friends and white husband, who like greasy Chinese food take out on occasion, know that they are not the target clientele, lest they actually decide they want to patronize this place.

  3. BSD: I’m neither, but I can spot a stupid ignorant comment from far, far away. I bet these Chinese noodles taste great to the stupid drunk white frat boys stumbling home from bars on 4th Ave. ‘Nuff said.
