re: the remorse article. i read it this weekend. it was pretty cool. it was a good article that didnt make me barf like most of the articles in the real estate section of the paper do. i did feel bad for the people who sold and stuff, but that’s life. i collect video games, and sometimes video games are rare and have a small print, sometimes, a weird demand will come into play from an old system that a lot of people would never have expected. most of the time, the video games you buy just depreciate in value. that’s the nature of the industry. obviously, houses, in general always appreciate in value in the long run., that wasnt really my point, my point is that i dont go hunting for old school video games as an investment… which a lot of collectors DO now and then get pissy when something they bought they cant sell on ebay for 100x the amount :-/
i collect old video games and systems to play them. not to have them sit and pontificate and stress out how much they will be worth in a year or two. i appreciate these old pieces of electronics much like some people appreciate these old houses. most people would consider both of them just plain old junk.
you dont buy a house banking on it to appreciate in value 10 fold over in 10 years just like i do not buy old video game systems hoping that the next time im broke i can buy a pack of cigarettes. home is home, play is play, if you really want to have money in the future, you save your money now and invest properly. you dont invest in things so precarious in nature like the value of junky old systems and decrpetit old row houses. everyone once in a while people get a reality check. yeah it sucks, but i think at the end of the day they enjoy what they DO own more. i dont care that i paid more for my video game collection than what i can sell it for, that was never the point!!!
Bob Marvin, just the poster I was hoping to see – I have a question about a specific house, could I email you?
househunt: We had a snack at a local Indian restaurant, I had a great mango lassi for half whatit costs me at Hampton Chutney. The broker seemed pretty excited about a new charter school approved for next year (kindergarten and 1st grade, with plans to add grades as years go by)- no location yet.
I thought I would share a couple of completely useless data points that folks might find interesting on a slow day.
We just sold our condo in Boerum Hill. We ended up taking an all-cash deal at 15% off initial ask. We had a good offer at 10% off initial ask but we elected to take the cash offer. We purchased the condo in 2004 and our sell price was about 35% more than we purchased it for. We did no major work on it. It took us 6 months to sell, which was really how long it took me to come to accept that our initial list price was too high. On the other hand, we received many (10+) 20-30% off ask offers, so it seems that there may be quite a few bargain hunters out there.
We are closing on a house in Victorian Flatbush (West Midwood) this week. There were multiple offers on the house and after a very mild bidding war, our offer was accepted at 2% off of a very fair (in my mind) list price. The house was on the market less than a month.
Obviously, this is not an indicator of the market at large, but there are sales going on out there. I’ll go back to lurking now.
take a guess how many quarters fit in a Play-Doh jar?! 30 bux worth! woot!!!! i’ve been filling up my old play-doh jars with money, quarters in the pink, dimes in the yellow, nickels in the blue, etc.. (i dont save pennies. gross). the quarter one filled up first and i decided to count it. 30 bux exactly for the most part! which is good cuz i have to do some mad needed laundry today.
