While passing by 82 6th Avenue, the old Helios spot currently being transformed into a beer bar, we noticed wood has replaced the previously metal storefront. And when we popped our head in the door we got some more details on the spot. The exterior wood is from an old home in Park Slope, and it’s also being used for the big wooden tables inside. If all things go well, the place should be open in a few weeks. You can expect smoked meat and cheese, Belgian beer, and Belgian fries. Looking promising?

I’ve never heard of Kefi – but am sure it’s good! I will say though nothing beats Greek food in Greece – good lord their tomatoes are like no other!
I haven’t been to Athena yet Gem, but I’ve heard very good things.
I work near Kefi on the UWS and it’s so freakin good, so I usually get my fill of Greek food during the day. 🙂
not loving the look of the wood for this building. The top is very ornate and victorian looking. this does not match and it’s in a very visible location.
I liked the Belgian slant…there’s that place Vol de Nuit in the West Village (on w. 4th right off 6th ave) and a place by my old office—BXL Belgian Cafe; the neighborhood can use a place like that.

In between it being Helios and this, it was a coffee bar type of place, I recall. The man would stand on 6th Avenue and hand out free coffee to people or charge them $1. The actual price was $1.25.

11217 – oh I liked the food there -they made a great Villager Salad which is one of my favorite salads to eat. i’m a sucker for greek food. Btw – have you been down here to Athena -love them soooo much!!

One of the previous owners of Helios actually is opening this bar. He told me that he managed Helios with a partner and it didn’t work out, so now he’s trying this on his own.

It certainly looks 100 times better than the shiny aluminum that was up all over the exterior when it was Helios.
The service at Helios was deplorable and the food was just ok. A beer place will do great, I think.
