While passing by 82 6th Avenue, the old Helios spot currently being transformed into a beer bar, we noticed wood has replaced the previously metal storefront. And when we popped our head in the door we got some more details on the spot. The exterior wood is from an old home in Park Slope, and it’s also being used for the big wooden tables inside. If all things go well, the place should be open in a few weeks. You can expect smoked meat and cheese, Belgian beer, and Belgian fries. Looking promising?
Beer Bar for St. Marks and 6th [Brownstoner] GMAP
Having eaten from Helios on numerous occasions, I’d rate their food pretty high – ingredients were always fresh and the cook certainly knew what he was doing. I think the owner lost interest in the restaurant, had some personal problems that needed to be worked out, and let the place go. He has renewed enthusiasm for the coming Belgian beer bar and hopefully there will be a decent menu as well. It’s not a big space so it certainly won’t feel like a beer hall inside but I wish the guy a lot of luck.
This spot has struggled ever since the family-run, Spanish restaurant that had a 20+ year tenure here closed down in the 1980s. It will be interesting to see if this new place can make a go of it.

“reclaiming wood from “an old home in park slope” for a food establishment comes across as mega grody.

wow, I’m so freakin’ glad I don’t live in the North Slope!
are beer bars the new wine bars?
is that a bearded woman on the second floor?
I’m so freakin’ glad I live in the North Slope!
Oh and there is new Greek restaurant opening on 7th Avenue between Berkeley and Union right next to the Park Cafe and across from the new Unleashed Organic Petco thing they’re building…
Actually since it’s related to Greek food, I should also give a shout to Istanbul Park on 7th Avenue around 7th Street.
It’s ridiculously good. I know quite a few Turkish people (and have been to Istanbul myself) and the food is extremely authentic and delicious. Decor isn’t the best, but the food is incredible.
Will definitely give it a try!
