As the video above chronicles and Park Slope Patch reported, on Saturday a bunch of people gathered to protest goose gassing in Prospect Park that involved a sing-a-long with the words “All we are saying is give geese a chance.” The Patch story says the following: “The Prospect Park Alliance is working with the Humane Society, Brooklyn College and other groups to find alternative ways to keep the park geese population to a manageable size, including by ‘oiling’ the eggs to prevent them from hatching, making a rule against feeding the geese and bringing in border collies to scare geese away.” The protest comes after the Department of Agriculture gassed geese last summer because they were said to be a threat to aviation safety.

  1. All I can think of is the 3rd Indiana Jones movie when Sean Connery sends the seagulls into the Nazi fighter with a ‘lil flick of the wrist and an umbrella. ‘cept this time it’s Boeing 737’s at appoximately 5,000 feet falling into a neighborhood near you. Get border collies? Really? Really? Did someone forget we nearly lost 115 people 2 years ago because geese flew into a jet out of LaGuardia? Border collies? Really?

  2. GEESE OR PEOPLE ?

this is really more of a red herring than a no-brainer. I might make sense IF there was any demonstrable connection between the Prospect Park goose population and collisions between planes and birds near the airports and, I think, most people would agree that killing geese here might be justified IF it was really necessary to protect people. As it is, last summer’s slaughter was just an act of gratuitous cruelty by lazy USDA and City bureaucrats determined to take the easy way to make it LOOK like they were accomplishing something to protect air traffic, without really doing anything efficacious. It reminds me of the old joke about the drunk looking for his lost wallet under the street light, except that it’s not funny.

  3. Is it really so wrong for people to have concerns about this? I personally could care less, but it does seem like typical government overreaction to kill these particular geese in order to prevent airline accidents. I would prefer spending my energy on other more important issues like bike lanes . . . .
