As the video above chronicles and Park Slope Patch reported, on Saturday a bunch of people gathered to protest goose gassing in Prospect Park that involved a sing-a-long with the words “All we are saying is give geese a chance.” The Patch story says the following: “The Prospect Park Alliance is working with the Humane Society, Brooklyn College and other groups to find alternative ways to keep the park geese population to a manageable size, including by ‘oiling’ the eggs to prevent them from hatching, making a rule against feeding the geese and bringing in border collies to scare geese away.” The protest comes after the Department of Agriculture gassed geese last summer because they were said to be a threat to aviation safety.

  1. Canada geese have a character that puts most humans to shame. Is that the reason they annoy some people so much…they show how small some people are. If all humans were like geese – mates would be faithful and every child would be loved and protected and they would defend their mates and children with their lives.

“Did you know Canada geese mate for life? They are one of the few species that are monogamous. They spend their whole life with a single mate. They also have a close family bond. Young remain with their parents for a full year and both mother and father take equal responsibility for nest building and child care. Together the pair guards, teaches, and feeds their youngsters until they are ready to fly off on their own. In order to facilitate courtship, mating and parenting the couple engages in a great deal of lively dialogue. They have a large repertoire of vocalizations each with different meanings. Some scientists believe they also have developed a whole range of non verbal actions and signs which are used for communication. Mates protect one another. I read an account of a Canada Goose who attacked a hunter on a horse after the marksman had shot his mate. The angry male swooped down on the unsuspecting fellow and literally knocked him right out of the saddle and on to the ground. When their partner dies, some geese may search out a new mate, but many simply remain single for the rest of their lives.

The famous theologian and writer Soren Kierkegaard once used the life of a goose as an illustration for a lesson he was trying to instill in his readers. He knew what a good example animals can sometimes be to people. The Canada Goose is a role model for human beings in many ways. It remains committed to one partner. Males and females take child rearing seriously and share the responsibilities involved. A close family life is crucial to survival. Frequent communication is essential.

The next time you spot a pair of Canada Geese take time for a second look and a little personal reflection. What they have to teach us is hardly “for the birds.”

  2. lechacal “Who cares if they are in air traffic? They’re loud, obnoxious shit factories. They don’t need to be downing airplanes to deserve eradication.”

….is that your solution to anything you don’t like..kill it? That really says a lot about your character. Try a little peaceful coexistence with nature or you can kiss the world goodbye if that was everyone’s attitude.

Canada geese have a better character than most humans and I often wonder if that is why small minded humans persecute them so senselessly.

I find loud and obnoxious people every time I go out. Only the most intolerant humans would support exterminating every small helpless thing that they didn’t like. What a STUPID reason for killing something. Get a character check!

  3. BSD “Unless theyre vegans, they’re hypocrites. The gassing is probably more humane than what factory farm animals go through.”

……. geese can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes and gassing them is about as inhumane as it can get as they thrash around in the containers dying slowly from the gas.

….does this mean anyone who protests cruelty to animals is a hypocrite and that meat eaters don’t or can’t give a rat’s …about the way any animals are treated?

The geese are dying for NO REASON. They were killed and soon replaced by other geese which actually increases the bird strike hazard.

Your city is wasting 100,000 a year giving it to the USDA to really accomplish nothing. It was MIGRATORY geese that Flight 1549 ran into not resident geese.

The worst plane bird strike was caused by a flock of starlings October 4, 1960. Billions of planes take off and land each year safely. More plane crash from mechanical and human error that from bird strikes and particularly from goose strikes.

What is your RATIONAL reason for supporting this cruel mass extermination of these birds? Do you really want NYC’s city parks to be known world wide as killing fields? Who wants to visit a park and find it devoid of wildlife? How are your children supposed to appreciate nature and wildlife with these kind of actions?

  4. Tina A “All we are saying is give geese a chance. John Lennon just rolled over.”……you seriously think so? Maybe ask Yoko what John would say. As well as a few more of the greatest men who ever lived…you think if humans abuse the most helpless creatures on the planet they will treat each other better? Doubt it!!

“We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it.

UNTIL WE EXTEND OUR CIRCLE OF COMPASSION TO ALL LIVING THINGS, humanity will not find peace. ~Albert Schweitzer, The Philosophy of Civilization”

“”The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men. ~St. Francis of Assisi

  5. Wishing them all a park blanketed in slimy green goose ordure. Will these tenderhearted advocates come out to protest when the Park puts out rat poison–or will they be revealed as “species-ist”?

  6. “Who cares if they are in air traffic? They’re loud, obnoxious shit factories. They don’t need to be downing airplanes to deserve eradication.”

I’m with lech. I’ve never liked ’em.

  7. what lechacal said. Why dont people have a problem with eradicating rats or roaches or pigeons? The Cuteness factor. But these things are a aggressive, pollute the waters, and the mine-field of shit they create not very sanitary.
