A motorcyclist was killed this morning at around 7 a.m. when he (we assume) was struck by a taxi heading east on Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond Streets. As of 9:30 this morning, Atlantic Avenue was shut down in both directions between Smith Street and Flatbush Avenue, causing a series of reverberating traffic jams on all the major thoroughfares in the area.

yes, that was a pedestrian…a retired guy who sat on that corner everyday with his friends peddling used wares or playing dominoes…one of those faux ambulance vans (ambulette? forget what they are called) was turning right onto Hoyt and was hit from behind, pushed them through the intersection, over a call box, and into the victim…it is a bad stretch, I walk it every day, and don’t like waiting on the corners ever since that accident on Atlantic/Hoyt

  2. If the taxi and bike were both driving in the same direction, they would likely only shut down that one direction. But if one was turning onto atlantic or making a u-turn (which I see a lot of here), they’d shut down both lanes to take pictures and measurements of tire marks or lack of them.

    But awfully sad.

  3. Oh goodness, how sad. The speed of traffic on Atlantic Ave. is seriously scary. A couple years ago a pedestrian (?or was it a delivery guy on a bike?) was struck and killed on the next block, by the bodega on the corner of Hoyt. Ever since then I’m obsessive about making sure my husband, dog, and I stand well back from the curb while we’re waiting to cross any part of Atlantic. I wish the city would figure out some effective traffic-calming measures…
