A motorcyclist was killed this morning at around 7 a.m. when he (we assume) was struck by a taxi heading east on Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond Streets. As of 9:30 this morning, Atlantic Avenue was shut down in both directions between Smith Street and Flatbush Avenue, causing a series of reverberating traffic jams on all the major thoroughfares in the area.
FYI this is the second fatality on Atlantic within a short period. There was another one at Atlantic and 4th Avenue within a couple of weeks. That one was a hit and run also in the early am……
I always stand back from the corners….so many pedestrians stand in the street to wait for the lights to change…or people with carriages push them out in front of them to “test” the traffic.
We all have responsibilities on the roads its too bad both drivers and pedestrians seem to forget that.
Most(but not all) pedestrians are killed when crossing against the light or in the middle of the block. That is what happened on Queens Blvd…the blvd of death until fences were put in the middle of the blocks to making crossing in the middle more difficult and red light cameras to cut down on speeders….
Motorcycle riding=death wish. No other way to interpret it I don’t think. Though I feel badly for the victim here, I would imagine that riding a motorcycle on a regular basis cuts your life expectancy down by several decades. I have heard that a huge percentage of organ donations come from motorcycle riders who have lost their lives on the road. Don’t know how to make it safer but I really have to question the sanity of anyone taking to the roads on a motorcycle.
“i can honestly say that the only times i have almost been hit, or had a problem, or someone cut me off was by a taxi. ”
Or by one of those windowless vans……ugghh!
city rider (motorcycle and bicycle) here as well…i can honestly say that the only times i have almost been hit, or had a problem, or someone cut me off was by a taxi.
the most dangerous drivers on the road…and they seem to only think motorcycles are in their way.
terribly sad.
I am a city rider. Dumping bikes in corners is not all that uncommon, especially for inexperienced riders. I did it once as a novice and was *extremely* lucky no one else was around. This sounds like a terrible freak accident.
🙁
yeah m4l, you should hear mine!
I was walking my dogs near the scene this morning and asked a bystander what happened. Turned out it was the cab driver who hit the cyclist. He was in a state of shock but it sounded like the motorcyclist fell and was then hit by the cab.
Yes, I understand that but you’d think after a couple of hours they’d gradually start to reopen it. But, I suspect that’s asking too much.
Altho Im just guessing
