stopped in on Saturday. at present they’re only serving sweet crepes, which are much less enticing to me than the savory crepes. friendly cashier told me that they’re still perfecting the savory batter (gluten free!), but they should have them ready by next week.
the previous tenant was a cafe, too, right? totally unmemorable pastry and coffee. just like almondine.
I’m sorry, but Almondine doesn’t cut it for me. The coffee does not compare to the machine that Crespella is using. I had an espresso from Crespella when they opened, and it was truly divine. Would love to see them offer fresh hand squeezed blood orange juice, similiar to the cafes in Italy.
Neither are very good espresso; Stumptown focus more on their drip coffees. Counter Culture, Intelligentsia, and Irving Farm do far better espresso.
serious question: why serve stumptown coffee but illy espresso? i realize illy is wildly popular in italy, blah blah blah – but why not stick with stumptown, which is roasted locally and has that brooklyn name recognition? (i’m assuming they’re both equal quality, i’m by no means an espresso expert)
I stopped in to check it out the other day. The neatest part was they seemed to be using an iPad as the cash register (with a wireless keyboard and some kind of stand thing to hold it up.) Someone behind the counter explained it was a “soft” opening so they weren’t actually selling crepes yet. It’s going to be hard for anything in this location to compete with Almondine across the intersection in terms of taste and quality.
