MTA watchdog blog 2nd Ave. Sagas did a detailed dissection yesterday of the impact of the MTA cuts on bus routes in Brownstone Brooklyn. (You can click on the two maps above to expand.) A few of the highlights include:
– Elimination of the B75 and extension of the B57 to Smith-9th Street;
– Extension of the B61 to Windsor Terrace, replacing the B77 and parts of B75;
– Rerouting of the B69 down 7th Avenue before hooking back up to Vanderbilt;
– Elimination of the B37 and B71 lines.
Here’s the blog’s take on the cuts: “For many people, these bus cuts will be devastating. It will take longer to travel from Point A to Point B, and trips will involve more walking on both ends. Residents in neighborhoods long used to the convenience of bus cuts will have to change the way they travel. But the MTA has its back to the wall. The agency has to save a lot of money, and eliminating redundant and underutilized service is the way to go.”

the new B61 route is in operation already. Plus you don’t have to wait an eternity for it, like the old B61, since it’s on a really small route compared to before
Anyone know dates of changes for these routes?
Thanks Joe, my job. Missed you last Thursday.
tybur, yeah you’re right. I’ve just always noticed the folks lined up in front of the McDonald’s on 9th and 5th. If you go on Friday afternoons they sit inside for an hour or two.
by underserved i mean underutilized or whatever bullfrak word they used in the report.
frickity fracking MTA. don’t they understand that part of the reason some of those bus routes are underserved is because the service SUCKS?!?!? seriously, a person could die of old age waiting for the B75. even with a bad foot and being super lazy, i still walk it most nights instead of waiting for that bus. interesting about the B71 too, seems like a very popular bus for peeps to take the kiddies to school, that will be rough.
Jester — but that’s why they extended the B61. It replaces the B77 segment to the choo choo. No?
The elimination of the B75 and B77 doesn’t look as bad as I first thought it would be. The B61 replaces service on 9th St. and goes to/from Ikea/Fairway. The real net loss is having to change buses to go from WT/PS to CH/Downtown, but did a lot of people take the B75 that far instead of jumping on the F (and now the G) or the R?
The extension of the B61 to Windsor Terrace is Awesome! I will actually be able to get from my house to Columbia Street with only 2 buses! Not 3 or 4.
Now, if they could just extend the B68 a little further, down to 4th or 5th Ave would be perfect!
Seems to me the ones most hurt by this are the residents of Red Hook and Ikea. They do still run the IKEA bus though dont they?
