MTA watchdog blog 2nd Ave. Sagas did a detailed dissection yesterday of the impact of the MTA cuts on bus routes in Brownstone Brooklyn. (You can click on the two maps above to expand.) A few of the highlights include:
– Elimination of the B75 and extension of the B57 to Smith-9th Street;
– Extension of the B61 to Windsor Terrace, replacing the B77 and parts of B75;
– Rerouting of the B69 down 7th Avenue before hooking back up to Vanderbilt;
– Elimination of the B37 and B71 lines.
Here’s the blog’s take on the cuts: “For many people, these bus cuts will be devastating. It will take longer to travel from Point A to Point B, and trips will involve more walking on both ends. Residents in neighborhoods long used to the convenience of bus cuts will have to change the way they travel. But the MTA has its back to the wall. The agency has to save a lot of money, and eliminating redundant and underutilized service is the way to go.”

Petition to save the B71

The B77 was essential for getting me and my kids to Red Hook Pool in the summmer. I’m interested in how the new B61 schedule compares in frequency of service.
I just spoke with Tish James’ office. Even though it’s technically a state issue, she’d like to hold a rally next weekend protesting the B71 elemination.
i’ve volunteered to hand out flyers along Eastern Parkway in Prospect Heights. Anyone in Park Slope or Carrol Gardens down to pass out flyers along the route in those nabes?
Yes, the Union St. bus is not reliable at all.
“frickity fracking MTA. don’t they understand that part of the reason some of those bus routes are underserved is because the service SUCKS?!?!?”

Of course the MTA is aware of this, it’s one of their main tactics — they’ve been doing it with the G train since forever. They provide spotty low quality service and then go out (often on weekend mornings when no one uses it anyway) and “monitor” the ridership and then say that no one uses the bus/train so they can cut service. I believe the Save the G Train group has actually caught the MTA in the act in regards to the G train.
MTA is a hoax.
i take the b71 to work everyday from crown heights to park slope. and yes, it already only runs 2 times per hour.
It’s usually got a lot of kids/parents on it during the mornings–this will be a tough blow.
what is my councilwoman Tish James doing about this? Anything?
both the coop and brooklyn museum should be speaking out against this as well….
Elimination of the B71 is gonna be tough on school kids and the elderly. Hiking up to Bergen St from Union, or down to 9th St, is a lot to ask for many people. And those who rely on public transportation to get to the Park Slope Food Coop will be really screwed.
Eliminating the B71 is going to cause big problems getting all the nannies from Crown Heights down to Carroll Gardens. And for all of those food co-op shoppers to get to both CH & CH via Union/Eastern Pkwy. It’s never empty and already is only running twice an hour most hours. Doesn’t make sense.
They just cut the B61, which used to run from Red Hook all the way to Long Island City in half because the route was so long it was inefficient and always late. Now they’re going to extend the line in the other direction when it’s finally running reliably?? What they should do is keep the 77 and run that up through Windsor Terrace. Then residents from the Slope and WT could get to IKEA/Fairway/et al in one bus and residents of Red Hook could get to Prospect Park.
