A reader sent in this photo of the old La Playa spot at 230 5th Avenue, which we’ve been tracking since construction started during the summer. It is slated to become a Mexican restaurant called Comida. (Not to be confused with the 1990s Swedish indie rock band Komeda.) Here’s Park Slope noted Comida was previously on the Upper West Side but closed due to a fire. This storefront has been pronounced “cursed” before, so we’re hoping this place can beat the odds.

  1. Fjorder, not only does Los Politos have 3 places, but there’s also Rachel’s, Mezcals like a block away, Tacos Nuevo Mexico, La Taqueria (it’s back open now), Fonda, I’m sure I’m forgetting some…

Oh yeah, that new place on Union and 4th Maria’s or something…

As I said, these owners don’t seem to have a clue.

  2. ah! fish tacos! that’s why the rumor was for an adult entertainment joint for this place- the rumor spreader just didn’t wait for the 2nd part of the news before jumping to conclusions…

  3. Los Politios alone has 3 places in north park slope. for ‘higher end’ dining experience, Palo Santo. For lower end, that place on 7th (that was shuttered recently via DOH).

This place MEX-I-CAN’T be serious! You’d think they’d walk the neighborhood before investing into a spot that’s already seen just about every genre of establishment go up in flames.

  4. 11217…it’s truly amazing but you have a point. I can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve spoken to restaurant employees and owners and they have no clue what else exists near them.

  5. How many Mexican restaurants does one neighborhood need exactly?

The proprietors of this business don’t sound too swift to me. Failed idea after failed idea. You’d think they’ve never walked a block beyond this corner to realize that the neighborhood is already saturated with Mexican restaurants.

    Stupid.

  6. there is already a mexican place on the corner of 5th and president, and one on president between 4th and 5th (el jalapeno….SO GOOD, please go)….why do we need another one? i think that corner needs a nice, classic, american diner. thoughts?

  7. They were previously in a ‘cursed’ spot on the UWS! (82nd & Columbus).
They were not there for long. Over the prior 3 years the space had also been an Irish bar and a Cajun restaurant.

Was not aware of the fire. Don’t remember any noticeable damage.
