A reader sent in this photo of the old La Playa spot at 230 5th Avenue, which we’ve been tracking since construction started during the summer. It is slated to become a Mexican restaurant called Comida. (Not to be confused with the 1990s Swedish indie rock band Komeda.) Here’s Park Slope noted Comida was previously on the Upper West Side but closed due to a fire. This storefront has been pronounced “cursed” before, so we’re hoping this place can beat the odds.

  1. Park Slope does have great Mexican food…Fonda is really, really outstanding. I like Tacos Nuevo Mexico also.

I have no idea why those Dos Pollitos places are packed every day and night…they’re god AWFUL!

I just read the reviews for Comida when it was on the UWS, and they were all quite good. So I guess we’ll see. Mexican just doesn’t get me very excited though, usually. Fonda does, however.

  2. I agree with all of the above but just to add something new, I will say that EXCELLENT food ill offset almost all ills including market saturation of similar menu type….that being said, it is highly unlikely that the great food exception will apply here – but one can hope.

  3. If this is actually good Mexican it’ll do well. Sadly most people in the Slope are bland enough to think Pollitos is authentic and good. All because you have 10 turds on the street doesn’t mean someone cant come in and blow them all away…no such thing as first mover advantage kids.

  4. Hahaha! What’s wrong with people?! Now there’s a Mexican place on 3 corners of that intersection alone (well, one is just a couple of buildings in.) Now the Cat Clinic should go Mexican and we’ll be all set. And yes, Oaxaca is a block away. The new place that used to be Maria’s is 2 blocks away. And then there are all the other mediocre Mexican places mentioned above. (Perhaps Comida will actually be good?)
