  1. ENY – You have to read Montaigne’s essay on the comparative “civilisation” between new world cannibals & old world gentlemen in which he admires the “savages” since they humanely kill their enemies before eating them whereas the French tortured theirs – eviscerating them, etc. while still alive.

  2. “Yes and no to that, it’s basically an American adaption of a peasant dish that wouldn’t be served in RESTAURANTS in Italy but I’m sure you would find something similar in the small towns around Naples… (similar to pizza in the way that pizza slices is an adaption of the single-person Neapolitan pies…)”

Joe, sorry, not true. My family (on both sides) originated from these small towns around Naples, and meatball wasn’t a staple there. In fact, even up to 30 years ago, it was hard to find any beef at all in these regions, due to the poverty levels. Veal and some pork was much more prevalent.

  3. Columbus returned with 17 ships and 1,200 men and attack dogs to bring back slaves and gold. Within two years, half of the island’s 250,000 Indians were dead. He wrote, “Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity go on sending all the slaves that can be…sold.” By 1515 there were only 50,000 Arawaks surviving; by 1550 there were 500. By 1650 none of the original Arawaks or their descendants had survived.

  4. “some folks said that they didn’t feel welcome because there is a regular “group” that hangs out there”

Cucina Napolitana has just been voted Official Restaurant of the OT

  5. Columbus wrote of the Arawaks: “They are the best people in the world, and above all the gentlest–without knowledge of what is evil–nor do they murder or steal. They have the sweetest talk in the world…always laughing. They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features. They do not bear arms. They would make fine servants. With 50 men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.”

  6. “It’s possible we ALL caught the cough at Ratifico. Must be rat-borne, right Snaps?”

I was fine after Ratifico. I guess I’m immune to diseases transmitted by vermin. Must be a tolerance built up from years of working at The Death Star.
