Pacific-Street-Cafe.jpgA very excited Nostrand Park shared the good news that Nostrand Avenue will be getting a coffee shop soon, one that is aiming to be a “quality ‘high end’ space, serving bagels, Italian pastries from Ariola pastries, fresh smoothies, and of course, coffee.” The cafe, which is was, but is no longer, an extension of the Pacific Street Loft Condo development nearby at 1311 Pacific, will be called Pacific Oasis Cafe. If things work out, the new owners plan to expand in the neighborhood.

  1. As a part of the new cafe I wanted to clear some information. The cafe, is NOT an extension of the Pacific Street Loft Condo development. We actually brought the space from them. The owners of the condo development did not want to continue with it. The awning will be change by the end of the month to Pacific Oasis Cafe. The new owners of the cafe are not part of the condo development. Our prices are going to be reasonable to the community. We will not be over charging customers.
    Thank you

  2. meansproduction, you are, of course, free to support whomever you like, but look at your list of coffeeshops. ALL of them are over in BedStuy, some, like T-cup, so far away from Pacific and Nostrand, you could take the subway to get there. We need our own shops, too. There’s plenty of room for everyone.

Before those condos were built, that lot was empty for literally 50 years. During that time, it filled with rats and garbage. I’ll take the condos. They are very different from anything else in the neighborhood, and I find that a good thing. The developer took a chance on a block most wouldn’t touch, and took care to interact with people on the block, respecting them, and treating them as people with as much right to be there as he was. I appreciate that, and wish all developers felt that way. He saw the need for a coffee shop, got the lease and started it, although he is not running it. I wish the owner the best, and plan on supporting him, as I support the businesses you mentioned above, as well as other businesses closer to home. As I said before, there is room for everyone.

  3. i’m pretty sure this coffee shop is connected to the gentrifying ugly condos next door that look like a glorified parking lot (same color awning, came about around the same time). these condos breaks from the beautiful architectural theme of the neighborhood. this will help residents of the new condos avoid interacting with the neighborhood.

i won’t support this coffee shop, even though its right next to me. there are actually a lot of great coffee shops near by that are black owned, and i’d rather support them. check out: aida’s coffee shop on nostrand between halsey and macon, bushbaby on fulton and bedford, or t-cup on throop between decatur and fulton.

us white gentrifiers tend to want to create our own spaces that we feel comfortable in, but if we look around, there is so much the neighborhood already has to offer.

  4. @Benzyme

Does that means there’s a correlation between income and level of interest? If that’s the intended meaning, I clearly cannot see how income level qualifies a neighborhood either as a “desert” of an “oasis”.

One unfortunate comment from your part in my opinion. But yet again, nobody forces you to visit the neighborhood, or to stay in it for that matter.

The rest of us will no doubt enjoy the efforts of hard working entrepreneurs trying to open and run new businesses in Crown Heights.

  5. I probably would have peed my pants with excitement if this opened up when I lived off Nostrand. Hell, I would have done the same if I was still around when the Dunkin Donuts opened.

  6. Ishtar- nope. Really. They have a sign up and they are doing work. I got a peek inside through the door but it was too dark to see much. I love steak- at this point I am willing to eat shoe leather if it’s right around the corner 😉

  7. bxgirl, is that Steakhouse a joke? LOL If it’s true and turns out to be great, I’ll definitely give it a try. I love steak and I’m extremely picky about it. I usually have to order my steak rare just to get it medium-rare when I go to places that are not steak houses.
