Cobble Hill's Breuckelen Already Closed?
Is it time to strike one off the list of the bazillion or so eateries that incorporate some version of “Brooklyn” into their names? Cobble Hill blog is reporting via a tipster that Breuckelen, the restaurant on Clinton Street in Cobble Hill, has closed. Yesterday a reader dropped us a line saying the same thing. All that’s known for sure is that biz was not open last night, and no one’s picking up the phone. The restaurant opened just last September. GMAP
LOL, a sports bar….I’m sure the neighbor’s would love that.
So. Cobble – for a little triva – what was the name of the place when was scandanavian ?
FYI there is currently a sign on front door saying “Breuckelen is taking a breather. We’ll be back shortly”
(tried posting this 3 hours ago but for some reason comments aren’t appearing)
“I thought the peeling paint was intentional to give it that “gritty” Brooklyn feel (that is so pronounced in Cobble Hill).”
Snort!
Better Half and I went to dinner at Bruecklyn exactly once. The food was good/nice, but nothing super special for the price.
The atmosphere was just a little tooo white table cloth/precious. Something reverting back toward Cafe on Clinton would be a better bet. Daily specials—steak night, etc. I knew quite a few people that went just for those, and REGULARLY.
I wonder if this will be predictive for Colonie – I think of them as similar places.
The Rent was not the problem. The concept was wrong for the location and apparently they were also underfunded. I happen to know they got a good deal.
It needs to be a neighborhood place. It should be friendly, open all day, serving affordable but tasty food and drink.
don’t see how the rent just being negotiated means the rent can’t be too high. certainly some new businesses make mistakes and pay too much rent, or more than they can afford to for what they are selling.
a shopkeeper whose store I liked closed – he was paying more per sq. foot than anyone else in the area from opening day – ok, that one probably goes under lack of business sense – I mean, you gotta do some research and check, not just trust the broker…
i loved CoC even tho the menu was tired. but its the perfect location for a bite alone on way home or meet for a quick drink. the food was tricky and i ate there once.. it needs to be casual and moderately priced..

I have to say, I’m surprised by this closing. The one time we went, we really enjoyed it. Just three weeks ago we tried to go back at 7:20 on a Saturday night & there was a two hour wait (we left). Actually, come to think of it, we were kind of bitter about this because we had called the day before and of course (like EVERY place in this neighborhood) they don’t take reservations. Yet the woman on the phone said “oh, but if you come before 7:30, it will be no problem. There’s never a wait that early” Really? I found it hard to believe we hit the *one* busy night ever.
And kind of off-topic but why is it that almost no restaurant in this ‘hood takes reservations? We actively avoid Cobble Hill / Carroll Gardens for dining because of this fact.
