For awhile there the sidewalk expansion project at Smith and Bergen Street left nothing but a lot of unused concrete space. A garden was recently planted on that corner, and it looks like they’re growing corn. Brooklyn Paper explains that there will also be bean and squash plants, traditional crops planted in the area by the local Marechkawich tribe. Not bad to have a vegetable garden in the neighborhood, and it also serves as a nice makeshift bench outside of the subway station.
It looks like this spot has already attracted vermin. that said, the lamposts are rather shockingly free of any taped up postrs or flyers. Pete????
it is going to attract litter. And who is going to clean it out?
and bicycles around it to block pedestrian traffic.(see pic)
“That guy Ellis who draws those chalked shadow outlines – this is/was one of his favorite spots.”
I LOVE Ellis! is he still around? I haven’t seen any Ellis-art recently. Tell him to come back over to Court Street!
What’s wrong with a gimmick? This looks nice.
why are there no references to this tribe on the internet outside of coverage of this woman’s garden?
Putnam, does it attract vermin?
My cross the street neighbor plants corn in his side yard – seems to be successful. Perhaps he hand pollinates?
seems like it would attract vermin. strange.
Never heard of those three sisters. I have heard of the three Rhea sisters though.
