For awhile there the sidewalk expansion project at Smith and Bergen Street left nothing but a lot of unused concrete space. A garden was recently planted on that corner, and it looks like they’re growing corn. Brooklyn Paper explains that there will also be bean and squash plants, traditional crops planted in the area by the local Marechkawich tribe. Not bad to have a vegetable garden in the neighborhood, and it also serves as a nice makeshift bench outside of the subway station.

I don’t think a Hollywood art director could have come up with a better view of declasse brooklyn.
i dont condone these kinds of projects much because they are well (sorta ridiculous and lame) but if you wanna talk about “declasse brooklyn” you can find much worse. i dont think anyone sitting there is harming anyone (well maybe like pete said the annoying bikes in the way of pedestos), but there is much worse. do you know what declasse means?

Ergot, YES!!!! that is it!!! 🙂 that’s probably in the substance that got the paint off the building and sidewalk today!

well that’s just hideous. I don’t think a Hollywood art director could have come up with a better view of declasse brooklyn.
I miss Ellis.
The three sister plants idea is interesting. Nice public art. But my cynical side is counting down until those plants are yanked up. 10, 9, 8, 7….
rob – That’s called ergot & is considered a delicacy by some indigenous Mexicans – as a result it has become a very costly food item in some places.
The problem w/ growing food on that corner is that it will be contaminated by car exhaust & therefore inedible.
Ellis G used to live on Hicks street, he moved to Williamsburg, but he comes back sporadically.
my territory for flyer removal is at other end of station
do you people know the whole story behind the horror movie the children of the corn? corn, if not properly taken care of, produces a toxic substance that actually rots ones brain and turns them literally into crazy people. that’s what was happened to the children in that town in nebraska. i have no clue if the movie and book is based on a true story, but corn does produce some weird thingie that messes with your brain.

Pete — You are horribly grumpy old man.
