Closing Bell: Pawn Shop Protest This Saturday

There was another protest this Saturday outside the Franklin and Park Place Pawn Shop that is supposed to open in Crown Heights. I Love Franklin Park has an excellent summary with details. From the post: “Pawn shops would not be viable businesses if mainstream lending institutions didn’t routinely avoid and ignore lower-income communities, particularly communities of color. Likewise, the people who pawn shops exploit wouldn’t have to patronize them if they had better access to employment opportunities, particularly in their neighborhoods.” Council Member Letitia James talked to the owners of the pawn shop and spoke on improved financial education and the insistence that businesses on Franklin hire locally. And I Love Franklin Ave. suspects the pawn shop won’t be opening due to zoning issues.

Update – the 25 activists were victorious the pawnshop is no more, a thai restaurant is opening there instead. Change can be made when one ( or 25 in this case ) walks the walk instead of just talking the talk in a virtual realm.
Remember in the movie “Lawrence of Arabia” when he rides back into the desert to save a man… then later the same guy gets stabbed to death in a fight by the campfire?
For some reason this blog post somehow reminds me of that scene.

I’ve been seeing the anti pawn shop signs in store windows on Franklin Ave.
Instead of “pawn shop” they should call it a “collateralized microloan shop.”
The Pawn Shop has already closed in response to community protests and, presumably, to avoid being closed down by the City after it was discovered by community activists that they remodeled and opened in violation of applicable laws and permit requirements. Maybe that protest–and the others that proceeded it–weren’t so “silly.”
Tomorrow I’m gonna protest about the sun coming up too early, then write my congressman about the cold weather.
Don’t we have politicians who can fix these pesky issues for us.
I saw this one the news and it looks like a whopping 20-25 people showed up. The pawn shop will open in a few weeks and, as with all of these silly protests, the issue at hand will simply be forgotten.
