When we stopped by Gorilla Coffee at 97 Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, site of the infamous mass quitting, this morning, there was no sign of life inside the shop, but there was a sign from the owner promising to return after rebuilding her workforce.

  1. At the far other end of the Slope, (or Greenwood, if you prefer), I recommend going out of your way for Southside Coffee, 6th Ave. and 19th St. One of the best cups I ever had, with cute leaf pattern and all, served by really nice low-key folks, and the place is a nice mellow hangout for neighborhood people. If it was a “scene,” I missed it (thank God) both times I was there in the morning; last time, on a raw rainy morning, it was just me and one other customer with a laptop open. They deserve to have lines out the door!

  2. “Combined that with…long lines and I don’t know how this place stays in business.”

It stays in business despite long lines? Huh?

To paraphrase Yogi Berra, the place is so crowded, nobody goes there anymore.

  3. I went three times, but managed to get an actual cup of coffee only once (the line was out the door and moving at a glacial pace the two other times I visited). COFFEE FAIL! This was probably the most over-roasted coffee I have ever had. Combined that with surly service (now we know why), a messy space, and long lines and I don’t know how this place stays in business. Might as well go to ‘bucks, at least they offer their employees health insurance.

  4. The workers sound pretty lame to me. I mean, mass quitting BEFORE one of them gets fired for standing up to the loudmouth??? It wouldve been so much cooler if they all waited for her next outburst and then all told her to STFU in a unified chorus, lol. Then the mass resignations wouldve been cool.

  5. I am shocked that the blogging community hasn’t written a comprehensive piece about what the heck happened here. I see some comments and stuff, but can anyone give a thorough fun soap opera style account of what happened and who is to blame. This place is so affluent yuppie it is just ridiculous to see it happening.
