The Crown Heights Oral History Project is a project conceived by four students from Paul Robeson High School to record 60 conversations between themselves and longtime residents of Crown Heights, and donate their recordings to the Brooklyn Historical Society. Since this February they have spoken to residents about their first ever trip on the subway, old music scenes in the neighborhood, and the protests that saved the Brooklyn Children’s Museum from shutting down. Check out the website for their stories and plans to broadcast their recordings to the community in June.

  1. Great project!

If we don’t record the memories of our seniors, entire lifetimes of experience, history, and memories are gone forever. This community (every community) stands on the history that shaped it. It’s great to hear stories of what a neighborhood was like, what has changed, stayed the same, what’s gone forever.

I know some of the people involved in this project, and I hope they are able to reach many, many people and record their stories. We have a large senior population, there is much to do.
