Today The Brooklyn Paper ran the image above of the sculpture of Miss Brooklyn and Miss Manhattan that will “soon perch on a rotating platform high above Flatbush Avenue as part of a redesign of the so-called Gateway to the Borough.” The article says the work, which is designed by artist Brian Tolle, will be located at the Flatbush Avenue Extension median just south of Tillary Street, near the entrance to the Manhattan Bridge.
First Look at Artist’s ‘Gateway’ to Brooklyn [BK Paper] GMAP
I focused on the statue because the headline was “Closing Bell: Big Sculpture Coming to Downtown” and the picture was of a statue. The text on Brownstoner is also almost entirely about the statue.
If the headline were “New landscaping coming to Flatbush,” the comments would probably be different.
’17, the article isn’t about the median; it is about the sculpture. What is the headline? “Here it is — first look at ARTIST’S ‘GATEWAY’ to Brooklyn.” (Emphasis added.) What is the illustration? As above.
Now that is cleared up … this is post-modern art at its worst; seemingly full of meaning but in fact just the opposite.
i like things that spin, so im okay with this!
*rob*
Why so many nasty comments? If you don’t like the statue, fine. Did you READ the article? How about focusing on the positive aspects of the new planted medians, wider sidewalks and benches making Flatbush a more welcoming entry into Brooklyn? Yes, it’s still going to be Flatbush Avenue, but trees and plants are going to help A TON and it’s going to look terrific, no doubt. Who cares about the statue…it’s one TINY piece of a huge restoration of the entry into our borough.
Do you people EVER say anything positive??!
thals, most of Brooklyn looks like a third world country.
Is there a Brooklyn inferiority complex here? Why do you need to acknowledge/welcome Manhattanites through your ‘gateway’? I don’t see a Miss Brooklyn statue in Manhattan, because they’re confident enough not to give a sh.t.
I will try to be open minded, but this looks lame.
Geesh, if you’re not sure you’re in Brooklyn, this will nail it.
No sure about the sculpture.
But can we first focus on all of Tillary and getting on the BQE??? Its a complete mess. Its dirty and looks like a third world country. Lets fix that on-ramp on Tillary first.
