Today The Brooklyn Paper ran the image above of the sculpture of Miss Brooklyn and Miss Manhattan that will “soon perch on a rotating platform high above Flatbush Avenue as part of a redesign of the so-called Gateway to the Borough.” The article says the work, which is designed by artist Brian Tolle, will be located at the Flatbush Avenue Extension median just south of Tillary Street, near the entrance to the Manhattan Bridge.

  1. fsrq you misinterpreted the comment. Manhattan cares about its side, thus the arch, but it’s not a nod/homage to Brooklyn (its modeled after Porte St. Denis). Why have Miss Manhattan, why not just something that’s purely a brooklyn statement. That being said I like the look of it.

  2. I get it…the pillar references the Manhattan Bridge towers and the figures represent the sculptures that have long since been removed to the Brooklyn Museum. That said, this is pretty hideous. I give it a week tops before someone’s old sneakers are spinning around up there too….

  3. Corey, originally it went to Fourth Avenue. As the project dragged on, the median got shorter. Oh, and before anyone asks the somewhat predictable question, the cost of the sculpture is not so great that it would have allowed the median to go even another block.

  4. Im with 11217 – I am excited about the Flatbush Ave improvements (And the statue), and I think it will make the enterance into Brooklyn quite nice.

as BSD’s ridiculous point about Manhattan not caring about their side….let me say…open your ‘fing eyes!! what do you think that massive Arch on Canal street is?

  5. Who cares about the sculpture…that’s irrelevant. Focusing on the streetscape….I’m surprised that the planted median only extends to Fulton Street. Would seem to make sense if they wanted a “Gateway to Brooklyn” it would go at least up to the new streetscape proposed for BAM (the “Grand Plaza”) and then transition into the Barclays Center.

  6. Paragraph 1: teaser.
    2. the sculpture
    3. the artist’s concept for the sculpture
    4. segue from sculpture to larger project
    5. ubiquitous Joe Chan boosterism
    6. current conditions
    7. project scope
    8. Mike Weiss cheerleading
    9. project impetus
    10. more on the sculpture
    11. more on the sculpture
    12. more on the artist

Even a textual analysis supports the theory the article is about the sculpture.
