Yesterday the mayor held a press conference about the city’s plans to crack down on cab drivers who refuse fares based on where a passenger wants to go, and they released the video above of what Gothamist calls a ‘secret shopper’ looking out for violations.” (The first fare refused in it is to 3rd Avenue and Union Street.) According to City Room, “complaints of illegal refusals by cabbies are up 36 percent during the eight-month span ending in February, compared with the same period in 2009 and 2010.” Taxi commissioner David Yassky said at the press conference that “his sister had recently failed three times to hail a cab in the rain while walking with her 7-month-old in Park Slope, Brooklyn.” The city is proposing harsher penalties against cabbies for fare refusals: $500 for a first offense and $750 and a 30-day suspension for a second offense.

  1. cab shift change time is 4-5 pm…its always been that way. The morning shift starts at around 7 am…so by 4(11hours) its enough…
Its illegal to ask before someone gets in where are you going.
Its also illegal for a yellow cab driver to use a cell phone or to pick someone up by pre-arrangement(although who will complain is another story)…

  2. Its like that NY1 commercial- “You know to tell the taxi driver your destination AFTER you get in the cab”

I thought this was common knowledge.

Taxis take more fares in Manhattan so ofcourse they don’t want to go to BK/QNS and have no return fare to the city or risk going further into BK/QNS with another passenger.

If you are driving a taxi you already making your living hustling (for fares, passengers, etc) its ingrained.

This is a great Bloomberg talking point but thats about it. If he were serious he would slap QR codes in the cabs similar to the new DOB permits.

“When you get a ride with a good responsible driver with a clean car ask for their personal card. Next time you need a ride call them direct.”

    I agree

-ah, that’s a good tip- thanks!

  4. “taking a cab during rush hour sucks balls. it’s faster to get anywhere via public trans”

    Agree.

And any other time if you’re going cross town it’s actually faster to walk.

  5. “The problem with shift change is that it’s also around rush hour. Someone outta look into that bullshit. ”

There was a couple of articles about it a month or so ago, and the basic conclusion was “it sucks, but as long as the 2 12 hour shift system is in place, it is going to stay like that”

  7. Actually, the ONLY time I had a cab driver with a New York city brn and raised accent was about 1998 when I landed at LaGuardia and was going to my place on East 54th. He was the one who showed me the quicker route to Hoyt, Crescent and over the Queensboro Bridge.

Subsequently that was the route I always took. oftentimes I’d get bullshit from the drivers because it really could be done for about $13-14 and I’d just tell them that if they didn’t stop the arguing there’d be no tip. I’ll always tip well but not if I get the annoying bullshit
