Yesterday the mayor held a press conference about the city’s plans to crack down on cab drivers who refuse fares based on where a passenger wants to go, and they released the video above of what Gothamist calls a ‘secret shopper’ looking out for violations.” (The first fare refused in it is to 3rd Avenue and Union Street.) According to City Room, “complaints of illegal refusals by cabbies are up 36 percent during the eight-month span ending in February, compared with the same period in 2009 and 2010.” Taxi commissioner David Yassky said at the press conference that “his sister had recently failed three times to hail a cab in the rain while walking with her 7-month-old in Park Slope, Brooklyn.” The city is proposing harsher penalties against cabbies for fare refusals: $500 for a first offense and $750 and a 30-day suspension for a second offense.

  1. Gem – don’t you say “I need to go to The Slope”, like Carol suggests? Or perhaps that’d make you sound like a dingdong to the cabbie.
It’s best to stick to “Park Slope”.

  2. I had a taxi driver give me some attitude for wanting to go to Brooklyn from LGA last week, but I have never had one refuse me.

On the other hand, I very rarely take cabs or car services.

  3. Taxi’s are a licensed, city public conveyance. As such, no one should be denied access to a ride, which they are paying for, to anywhere in New York City. Hooray for the Mayer and Commissioner for cracking down on this illegal action by some taxi drivers.

  4. Taking a cab within Brooklyn is more expensive than taking a car service which you can flag down on the street anyway. I haven’t actually called to order a car in quite a long time.

  5. I agree with Dibs
I have never asked a cabbie “Oh,I need to go to BK – can you take me”?
I just get in/close the door and say – I need to go to park slope please – you can use the tunnel – thank you!
