Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, a longtime Clinton Hill resident has opened a new local spot that serves Japanese comfort food.

The restaurant is called Chef Katsu Brooklyn and is located at 143 Greene Avenue. The head chef and co-owner is Katsu Machida, who runs the space with his wife, Chiemi. Katsu previously worked as a chef at Manhattan sushi establishments such as Blue Ribbon and Sushi of Gari.

The menu, posted on Instagram, features an assortment of Katsu burgers, rice bowls, soups and sides. They are currently having their soft opening, with plans for an official opening coming soon.

Formerly the space was occupied by New Hong Cheong, a Chinese restaurant that closed during the pandemic.

The pair behind Chef Katsu launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2020 that raised $51,853, which helped them procure the necessary kitchen equipment and furniture for the new spot.

They are currently open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Takeout and sit-down options are available, with online ordering soon to come. For more information, visit the restaurant’s Instagram page.
