Car Alarm Incident Reveals Tensions in Fort Greene?

The Post did its best this weekend to drive a divisive wedge into the multi-culti image of Fort Greene by writing about a car alarm incident on Lafayette Avenue. In case you missed it, here’s the play-by-play: Man (who turns out to be black) has a car whose alarm frequently goes off in the middle of the night; residents (plural) leave notes on car to ask him to fix his alarm; car owner does nothing to fix alarm; one of the residents, who turns out to be white, calls Council Member James to complain; James calls the car owner, who uses his anger over the changing demographics of the neighborhood and his Brooklyn cred to justify his inaction: “I don’t know what my fellow neighbors think goes on at night, but people come by and pillage vehicles! All of these little white people over here are not gonna dial 911 for a car alarm going off if it’s only once. The article goes on to quote a older African American woman irked by the new arrivals and their wide-load strollers (never mind that the sidewalk on that stretch of Lafayette is barely wide enough to accommodate a single pedestrian), though she attributes the differences more to class than race. The article’s attempt at pushing the race button feels like a stretch to us, but the one thing that does resonate is the attitude of people who’ve lived in any neighborhood for a long time—regardless of location or race—take towards newer arrivals who want to improve certain quality of life issues. “You haven’t lived here long enough to deserve an opinion” or “If you don’t like it then move” are familiar refrains. Last time we checked, though, we all pay taxes and there’s no reason anyone should put up with illegal or unneighborly behavior simply because it’s the status quo.
A Car Alarm, Gentrification and Fort Greene [NY Post]
NSS- wow- that’s awfully cynical. I do think some people are truly xenophobic but for most folk I’ve always believed it’s fear, not hatred.
I think the real lesson in this article is the fundamental core of human nature. People generally hate each other for some reason or another. If people piss you off its because they are black, or white, or foreigners, or jews, or midgets, or whatever. Thats why I think racism doesnt really exist. Its just a label for one manifestation of hatred that everyone feels for everyone else.
Can anyone relate an instance of when a car alarm acutally prevented a car theft. They seem to be futile. Everyone ignores them. I found it ironic that my auto insurer would give me a security discount on my insurance for having a car alarm but not for parking the car in a gated garage.
NRS, what did you end up getting?
MM used to have a Audi with a hole in the muffler. We would ride down the street setting of car alarms- it was hilarious. Our theme song (to be sung loudly over the Spectorish Wall of Alarm Sound was “Born to be Mild”). Ok ok -so we played with the words a little bit.
More seriously- yes. the Post loves to report bad news, old news, untrue news and stupid news. The guy in the story is a fool, but still- he is not the only one who feels this way when neighborhoods change. Black neighborhoods, Italian neighborhoods, Jewish neighborhoods, Spanish neighborhoods. We overlook the very real emotional investment people make in their homes, whether renter or owner.
“um, if you park your car 10 blocks away how are you suppose to hear the alarm going off?”
um, you should shut off the alarm.
Who the heck do you think is going to “respond” to your alarm in a way that protects your property if you don’t?
For the record, I recently bought a car and nearly bit the salesman’s head off when he wanted to sell me an alarm for it.
Yeah I cannot believe we are dignifying a New York Post article by even discussing it. What a crappy rag that is.
What a touching display of American heroism this whole story is.
If he prefers the old bklyn way of handling things before little white people came in, the neighbors should put a few bricks through the windows and etching fluid on the hood/doors. Then he’ll be pining for those civil white leprechauns.
