Car Alarm Incident Reveals Tensions in Fort Greene?

The Post did its best this weekend to drive a divisive wedge into the multi-culti image of Fort Greene by writing about a car alarm incident on Lafayette Avenue. In case you missed it, here’s the play-by-play: Man (who turns out to be black) has a car whose alarm frequently goes off in the middle of the night; residents (plural) leave notes on car to ask him to fix his alarm; car owner does nothing to fix alarm; one of the residents, who turns out to be white, calls Council Member James to complain; James calls the car owner, who uses his anger over the changing demographics of the neighborhood and his Brooklyn cred to justify his inaction: “I don’t know what my fellow neighbors think goes on at night, but people come by and pillage vehicles! All of these little white people over here are not gonna dial 911 for a car alarm going off if it’s only once. The article goes on to quote a older African American woman irked by the new arrivals and their wide-load strollers (never mind that the sidewalk on that stretch of Lafayette is barely wide enough to accommodate a single pedestrian), though she attributes the differences more to class than race. The article’s attempt at pushing the race button feels like a stretch to us, but the one thing that does resonate is the attitude of people who’ve lived in any neighborhood for a long time—regardless of location or race—take towards newer arrivals who want to improve certain quality of life issues. “You haven’t lived here long enough to deserve an opinion” or “If you don’t like it then move” are familiar refrains. Last time we checked, though, we all pay taxes and there’s no reason anyone should put up with illegal or unneighborly behavior simply because it’s the status quo.
A Car Alarm, Gentrification and Fort Greene [NY Post]
bxgrl,
I will spare all any further philosophical and or psychological rantings.
My beleif in a nutshell is, everyone generally dislikes everyone else. I think if you really think about it, it makes perfect simple sense.
Minard- the Post is a long long way down from the paper Hamilton started. It lies. And I speak from experience. It prints lies that hurt people and destroys good organizations.
Minard – NY Post is little more than a black and white version of Star or OK! Magazine.

NSS- I’m not disagreeing with you basically. We’re probably saying the same thing, just differently. People look at different cultures or ethnicities as “other” and too many things serve to reinforce that- like religion, or color or country of origin. We are too fast to ascribe the bad things one person does to the entire group. I just don’t understand why. Maybe its an evolutionary thing but I wish we could evolve a little higher then.
Have you ever lived in Hong Kong, nss??? Pushing and shoving is the order of the day. Subway and elevator doors opening are the worst.
Am I the only person to defend the NY Post?
It was started by my friend Alexander Hamilton way back when. I think it may well be the oldest newspaper in the whole country. I find that its content is no more mendacious on average than any other paper including the NY Times -and page 6 is always a must-read.
bxgrl,
Fear or hatred maybe, but the point is that we subconsciously use race as a cover to excuse the fact that we dont like someone.
For example, I know I cant help but think “Damn old chinese ladies” when they repeatedly knock me over to get a seat on the subway. I know at the heart of the matter has nothing to do with them being Chinese, I just hate them because they are obnoxious. Either way, every time I see an old Chinese lady, I take extra precaustion (Fear?) because I know I may, or may not, get knocked over.
I think most people behave in similar ways toward other people that annoy them and find some racial or physical cue to attach to them negatively. Im not saying its right, I just recognize its happening from my own perspective.
Good choice NSR. Good solid car and good on gas.
Kens — I got a Corolla. So, now instead of 158,324 of those in Brooklyn there are 158,325.
